Charles A. White, by virtue of the fact that he had prior service in the 3rd Mass. Inf. Rgt. (Apr.-Jul. 1861), enlisted as a Sergeant in the 3rd N.H. Inf. Rgt. in Aug. 1861. The 3rd N.H. was mustered-in to Federal service on 23 Aug. 1861. In Sep. 1861, they proceeded to Washington, D.C.; in Oct. 1861, they were ordered to Annapolis, Md., where they were assigned to the South Carolina Expeditionary Corps (later re-named the 10th Corps). On 18 Jul. 1863, the 3rd N.H. participated in the bloody Assault on Fort Wagner, S.C. (made famous by the charge of the 54th Mass. in the movie, 'Glory').

In Apr. 1864, the 3rd N.H. was re-assigned to the 3rd Bde., 1st Div., 10th Corps, Army of the James (commanded by MG Ben Butler of Lowell, Mass.), whereupon it participated in operations against Richmond throughout the rest of 1864. During this time, Sgt. White was promoted to 1SG, 2LT and 1LT. In Aug. 1864, while leading his company in a charge of the 3rd N.H. on the Confederate works outside Richmond, 1LT White was very seriously wounded when a ball passed completely thru both lungs. The regimental surgeon, fearing the wound to be mortal, sent him home, where he was slowly nursed back to health by his wife, Caroline (Foster). In Feb. 1865, 1LT White returned to duty with his regiment, whereupon he was promoted to Captain. Finding field duty too strenuous, he was assigned to headquarters staff duty. At the end of the war, Capt. White received the brevets of MAJ and LTC for his bravery in action, and for his services as a staff officer. BVT LTC White was mustered-out of Federal service with the 3rd N.H. on 25 Jul. 1865. After the war, he and his wife, Caroline, relocated to Greeley, Colo., where he served in the State Militia, rising to the rank of Brigadier General. During the Civil War, the 3rd N.H. lost 12 Officers and 186 Enlisted Men who were killed or mortally-wounded-in-action, for a total of 198 combat fatalities--a total exceeded by few regiments, testifying to the hard-fighting performed by this regiment, especially at Fort Wagner in 1863, and the Richmond Campaign of 1864.

My ancestor Nathan enlisted in the 3rd New Hampshire on August 12, 1862 and mustered in two days later. His service record says that he was 44 years old when he joined up, but in truth he was 48. He had previously served in M Company of the 1st Rhode Island/1st New England Cavalry but was discharged for illness. On July 10th, 1863 on Morris Island, SC, Nathan was severely wounded in the breast, and hip. On June 8, 1864 he was discharged for disability in New York. Any additional info anyone might be able to provide would be most welcome.

My ancestor Welbee J. Butterfield was first a Lieutanant Jul 23 1861. He then became a captain in the 3rd NH Regiment company K. He was in active service for two years when he resigned as captain on March 6, 1863 due to ill health, but signed up again to work in the Veteran''s Corp (invalid corp). He was discharged from the Veterans Corp Nov 15, 1865 Boston, Ma. If anyone can add more information with pictures, papers, insignias, battles, ribbons etc. Please email me at nhjack3@comcast.net

Looking for pictures of my Great Grand Father he was from Franklin NH. I have all his battle records and found his grave site in Franklin NH
